vest and sweater - topshop/scarf - target (gifted)/jeans - bdg/boots - frye/bag - balenciaga

this is an outfit from a couple of days ago. i can’t seem to get enough of stripes these days, and i laughed when i was putting away my clothes the other day to count something like ten different striped shirts/sweaters in all. they do go with everything, and are a little more interesting as an under layer than just a solid color. i’ve clocked about a gazillion miles this winter in these boots and am ready to give them a rest (much as i love them), but the vest is not going anywhere any time soon. i freakin love this thing.

so incredibly saddened to hear about alexander mcqueen. it’s hard to imagine the fashion world without him.

lunch date

this snowstorm may not have been good for my stir-craziness, or for my footwear, but it sure has been good for the blog. one thing it has afforded us, in all this time off, is a chance to take lots of pictures (and together! which doesn’t happen as much as you’d think it would for living all of five blocks from one another, but we are trying to be better about that). another thing it has given us is lots of gorgeous sunshine! megan and i met up today to have lunch and trudge around town and here are some snapshots of our afternoon:

weathering the weather

Sunday, February 7th, 2010

Still not sure how Mother Nature got VA mixed up with the Siberian tundra this winter, but L and I tried to make the best of it this weekend, braving the blizzard for wine, mussels, fries and some live music on Friday. We had fun taking photos in the snow, even if our outfits aren’t exactly decipherable due to the approx. 23 layers we’re both wearing!

dsc03224

We tried to keep it as chic as possible (ACAP), with lots of black, faux fur, stripes and sparkles.  Mother Nature went for the simple all white look, which is classic year-round.

Kybecca, a local wine bar, was offering all-you-can-eat-moules-and-frites, so…

dsc03190

….we obviously had to partake.  I got the Thai curry and L opted for the garlic.  I’m gonna go ahead and be honest, though, and say I really only wanted buckets full of those f’in french fries with the cilantro mayo for dipping (I’m a sucker for frites, whatcanIsay).  mmm, hungry.

As frustratingly immobilizing as the storm has been, it has been fun trekking around a snow-covered Fredericksburg with friends on Friday, grilled cheese and gossip girl Saturday afternoon followed by spiked hot chocolate/bad movies in the evening…. and now gearing up to hike up the hill for brunch and meet up with L to take more photos later.

What did the rest of you east-coasters do? Snowmen? Igloos?

We hope everyone stayed warm, safe and chic this weekend!

vest - topshop/shirt and ring - f21/pants - j.crew/shoes - frye/bag - chloe

loving this crazy wooly vest from topshop! NOT loving the “near-blizzard conditions” that are headed our way, “making travel very hazardous or nearly impossible” (according to the weather channel). snow that threatens to come up to my hips is not cool, although if it got me one or two days off of work that wouldn’t be so bad. luckily, i happen to be a very good homebody, so i foresee lots of cooking, reading, netflix watching, and maybe some kind of a diy project–knitting, sewing, jewelry making? we shall see…

stay warm folks!

what i wore to run errands and stroll around town saturday. the weather was not as freezing as it had been lately, so i temporarily abandoned my warm wooly pieces for spring-weight layers. i have been missing this scarf, so it was nice to give it some attention. hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

handsome husband

what’d i tell ya? lotta grey goin on these days. but i had been feeling this coat lately so it couldn’t be helped. this was a vintage find from a couple years ago, which of course had to be altered pretty drastically to fit my frame. i hacked about a foot off the bottom, shortened the sleeves, and replaced the original buttons (also huge, of which one was missing) with the biggest buttons i could find. after that, i felt less like it was swallowing me and more like it looked how it was supposed to look. and i guess mike got the color memo too–he happened to come home just as i was setting up the camera, and being dressed in a very blog-worthy outfit, was nice enough to pose for me.

wrap and jeans- urban outfitters/tee - aa/boots - jeffrey campbell/bag - balenciaga

i have been practically living in this blanket wrap ever since christmas, mostly for lounging around the house but also as actual outerwear on milder days. it reminds me partly of jane and partly of gala (only without the long luxurious locks to go with it), and it is turning out to be the warmer winter incarnation of the scarf jacket. not much color in the outfits these days–maybe i’m subconsciously mimicking the neutral palette of the outdoors, but lately it’s pretty much some combination of tan, grey or black. looking forward to soft pinks, lavender, black and white, and pops of red for spring.

hi all- sooo, my camera takes really crappy nighttime pictures, apologies for the blurriness. also, it’s effing cold outside. nevertheless, mike and i braved the temps to head downtown for dinner tonight and i made him take some pictures of me on the way. on the rare occasion that he is around to do it, i remember how much easier (and faster) it is than standing in front of a tripod. to all of you self-photographers out there: do you ever eventually stop feeling like a weirdo when people walk by on the street and see you standing there, posing at nothing? please tell me you do. ah, the awkward moments of a fashion blogger…

123009coat and dress – h&m/scarf – gifted/boots – j.crew/pins – vintage

i bought this beloved coat years ago in college (wow. i can’t believe i just said “years ago” and “college” in the same sentence) and though i only break it out a few times a year, especially around this time, it has remained with me ever since. i don’t know how i could ever part with it, which says a lot, because there aren’t too many clothes from that era that i have kept, or that have made it through the continual revision of my wardrobe. my favorite thing about it is the long rows of mother of pearl buttons on the sleeves. when i wore it back in the day, i had a spider brooch on the lapel, but that sadly i can’t find, so i have replaced insects with reptiles. i am always looking for jewelry that is animal-themed–i suppose the trick is avoiding the fine line between whimsical and downright cheesy.

i hope you all had (or are still having) a wonderful holiday. believe it or not, i didn’t receive one single piece of clothing (or shoes or accessories) for christmas! then again, i didn’t really ask for any. i guess when you’re a shopaholic like me, it’s christmas all year round!

Sooooo at this little partay that L mentioned in her previous post, we all participated in a [slightly drunken] snowman building contest.  we were team chicfaced (obvi) plus a 1 Mr. chicfaced.  You can see that our snowman came in two parts….head on a platter type deal.

12659_557278836841_26002813_33089268_8040763_n

It’s so messed up. I laugh every time I see it, but it is so messed up.  Anyway, for what it’s worth, we won the contest.

You can sort of get an idea of what I was wearing, too, which was all gray/silver/black (save for the purple hat) and many, many layered.

Time to go wrap presents and make some peppermint bark, mmmm.

xoxo, M
