kind of obsessed with the free people fall lookbook right now and will attempt to recreate all of these outfits in some form or fashion come fall. i am especially in love with the grey knee socks, the cream jersey and orange plaid dresses, and that black plaid skirt! that skirt will be mine.
but i know i can’t be the only one. it is just about the time in the collective blogger conscious when we all start looking ahead. and the magazines and catalogs aren’t helping. now that we are in the doldrums of summer, it is tempting to think of cooler temps and all the layering possibilities. i am starting to miss my leather, tweed and faux fur, but these things are still just a mere twinkle in my eye–putting on anything more than a cotton dress at this point in the middle of august makes me break out in a sweat just thinking about it. nothing wrong with being prepared though, right?
introducing the newest love of my life–the nightingale. i recently sold a couple bags that weren’t getting enough love, and then went on a mad hunt for a ‘gale (in the parlance of chauss). it was a bag i had toyed with buying, admiring it whenever i would see pictures of ashley olsen, the traina sisters, nicole richie or sienna miller toting it around, but never seriously considered, until one day, as often inexplicably happens with me, i had a sudden burning desire for it and could not rest until i had it. i am most definitely smitten and it hasn’t left my sight since it arrived last week. the leather is tdf and some of the smoothest i’ve ever felt (i am a leather whore, i can’t help myself), and its roomy size (this is the smaller version!) and simple silhouette are just perfection.
here are some droolworthy pics from my inspiration folder that helped to fuel my passion:
have you noticed that in the latest magazines there are sunglasses featured in almost every ad by almost every major designer? i think i’m detecting a trend here…even for ads NOT specifically promoting an eyewear line, the focus is on the face, and except for a glimpse of a watch, a piece of jewelry, or a hint of a fabric pattern, there is no shot of the ensemble in its entirety, and no attention is paid to the clothing. coincidence or not, i think this is an interesting approach to advertising–aside from showcasing the actual sunglasses, products in their own right, these pictures are selling a mood, and in every single instance, i’m buying. feeling mod? try shiny bright lips and white frames a la prada. hazy and romantic? a pair of rosy retro bottega venetas are just the thing. glam, sexy, hippie, androgynous, sporty–you name it, every persona is covered. what i also find effective is the contrast between mystery and intimacy that is present in every case. closeness and coolness in the same shot. so am i overanalyzing here? perhaps. but if nothing else, this abundance should tell us one thing. sunnies are the thing for spring/summer, so if you haven’t added to your arsenal of eye armor for the upcoming season, there is not a moment to lose!
I watched this video 1,000 times the other day – I love getting behind the scenes sneak peeks into all the things I love….esp street style photographs since the whole idea seems so mysterious to me. I live in a small town so I’ve not been able to experience seeing it happen in person.
And, yay! We have a new header! The super talented Laura is to thank for the super awesome drawing and our super awesome webmaster totallymeat is to thank for putting our new header together. So, thanks again guys!
Also, sorry I haven’t posted in awhile – my camera is really giving me issues…I feel like such a dunce but I seemingly cannot take a non-grainy, non-blurry photo to save my life! I’m trying again today, so there may be another post by yours truly this afternoon.
dolce and gabbana are the type of designers that i’m either completely loving or completely not feeling, from season to season. they can be over the top, but that can be a good thing at times. for fall/winter 2009, they have outdone themselves, in my opinion. maybe not the most cutting edge collection, and certainly not a minimalist response to the downturn economy, but that is not what they are known for; and the extravagant feeling of these looks is exactly the kind of thing i am responding to lately. what better era to hearken back to for glamour than the 40′s, which they’ve done here, with fur stoles, chunky platforms, hourglass silhouettes, and layers of tweeds, satins, damasks and animal prints. not to mention those AWESOME glove hats and scarves. how does one come up with that? and why did i never think of it before?
I get like this at the start of every season – I start cutting photos out of magazines, hoarding catalogues and begin quietly acquiring new pieces I won’t let myself wear until some arbitrary, made-up deadline (it’s usually the fall equinox…so maybe it’s not so arbitrary. Anyway.)
Remember this photo from my fall inspiration post not too long ago? I re-remembered it after Chloe from The Chloe Conspiracy, posted about this very same photo (it’s from September Marie Claire).
It’s sort of encompasses everything I’m trying to accomplish this fall/winter: light neutrals, knit pants, soft sweaters, faux fur, comfort, layers, big wooly scarves, and some badass shoes. All that’s missing is some sequins and feathers. I have deluded myself into thinking that once I get all these “key” pieces, I’ll be satisfied and my fall/winter wardrobe will have a solid, workable foundation. Yeah, I know. Silly girl.
Smooshy texture-y, comfy, colorfully soft awesome. I kind of need all of this. I already got the faux fur a few paychecks ago and now I’m working on those cashmere leggings ($38?!!) and cowl scarf from the yarnovermovement etsy shop.
What are the foundational pieces everyone else is trying to get their mitts on before fall arrives?
a little more fall inspiration for ya while we’re on the subject–some oldies but goodies from past seasons. tomorrow, i should have some outfit shots and modeling pics of the bag. mmhmm, it’s here, and it’s love!

We’re almost in September and almost being in September means we’re almost to fall and almost being in fall obviously means I now hate (despise! detest! what are you doing in my closet?!) all my summer clothes and need a new fall wardrobe immediately.
I want sparkles, feathers, fur (faux, duh), leather, suede, patent, glitter, wool, knits, silk, denim, leather, layers, hats, scarves, leopard, blazers, stripes, florals, patterns, tights, textures, socks, etc. etc. etc. Yes! Yes! Ye…ok, you get the picture. Here are some of my favorite looks from all the September issues (except you, Vogue. You know what you did.)
time to go watch mad men and drink wine in bed now.
